Stand Up Smarter at Work with a Standing Mat

In last month’s blog post, I talked about how sitting fatigue is a common problem experienced by office workers who sit for extended periods of time. The solution: break up long periods of sitting as often as possible by standing up.

Benefits of standing while working:

• Encourages daily movement by providing incidental physical activity
• Increases blood flow and reduces the likelihood of DVT (deep vein thrombosis)
• Re-energizes the body and mind
• Provides metabolic benefits
• Burns 2x more calories than sitting

Standing for long periods of time, on concrete floors, on flat ground, and in work shoes however can be just as fatiguing and hard on our bodies (back, knees, hips, feet) as sitting. The solution: standing mats.

There are a number of brands on the market, all of which are a uniform thickness; similar to the rubber mats you’d see hairdressers standing on in a salon.

What to look for in a supportive mat?

• The right thickness to take the pressure off your feet
• Not too thin that your feet hit the bottom of the floor
• Not to squishy that you sink into the mat
• Easy to clean
• Easy to access from underneath your desk
• Durable and long-lasting (polyurethane)
• Offers a good warranty
• Large enough surface area enabling movement on the mat

A good mat will be around the $100 price point.

The mat that I use and love is Topo by Ergodriven (I do not have a business relationship with this company). This thick, anti-fatigue mat comes in a variety of colors (purple, green, blue and grey) and is like a playground or ergonomic chair for your feet! It’s designed to facilitate dynamic standing on a polyurethane cushion with ramps and raised corners (for foot and calf stretches). At first glance this mat looks like a mini skateboarding park!

Here’s what I love about my Topo mat:

1. Easy hands-free positioning. I don’t have to bend down and reach under my sit-to-stand desk to move the mat. Instead, I can slide the mat with one foot and hop on.
2. Combats fatigue, stiffness, and boredom from standing in one position. I am constantly “on the move” while standing, shifting my foot positions along the different angles, curves and contours of the mat.
3. Facilitates dynamic movement while stretching the calves and increasing blood flow to the lower legs
4. Keeps me in a comfortable and upright posture
5. Engages the core and keeps me balanced – I often practice tree and various yoga poses while standing at my desk.
6. Keeps me energized, enabling me to stand longer. I stand for several hours a day and there are days when I am standing all day because this mat is so comfortable for my feet and body.

This mat is a little more expensive than other mats on the market but I find it to be well worth it (and includes free shipping).

Stand smart on a standing mat – this mat will change your experience at work!
